Suikoden V

Is there something wrong with console RPGS today? Is the genre going stale? Is it dying? If you're inclined to agree with any of these statements, Suikoden V's numerous charms are probably not going to sway you. If your answer is "Not necessarily," "Hell no!" or "RPG reviewers like you are a dying genre, jerk!" (in which case, please calm down and read the next sentence) this could be your next big game. It may not cater to the tastes of every finicky fanboy, but Suikoden V is a fine example of what console RPGs have been doing right all these years. Suikoden V has a robust, well-done plot that doesn't telegraph every twist or conform to embarrassing clichés. It has what's arguably one of the most attractive groups of core character designs to come along in a while, and a thoughtful translation delivered by confident voice actors. It keeps you involved in every major decision, lets you recruit your own army one member at a time, and has you command that army in strategic battles. Great stuff, but the game is less than ambitious when it comes to reinventing the aging RPG wheel, and whether or not you'll mind them, you'll feel a few bumps. The game seems to have both old school virtues and old school vices. Before we get into that though, the game has to be commended for its strong aesthetic. The world has an unassuming style but is loaded with small touches. An expansive overworld map and zoomed out view towns give the game a solid sense of scale, but can still be easily explored. Areas contain numerous implied nooks, and crannies are mixed in with a few genuine secrets you can actually explore. The game mercifully relieves you of having to press a button to search every dresser, mantle, and barrel by putting important items in treasure chests often found by wandering off the beaten path. Towns each have their own unique architecture and character, and you're able to feel like a tourist visiting a series of new locations without getting lost in empty, uninteresting spaces. After all, there's a whole world out there.
Thumbs up here; the feeling of visiting exotic locations in strange lands is a great fit for an RPG. One small caveat is that even if you know where you are, you won't necessarily know where you need to go. As the prince of a land called Falena (you name him yourself), you can always talk to your bodyguard Lyon to get a general suggestion on what you should be doing, but you will have instances of where-the-hell-do-I-go-now syndrome. In many annoying cases, the characters know exactly where they're going but you don't, leaving you to wander around like an idiot hoping to come across the right doorway to trigger the next bit of plot. In one of these instances a soon-to-be-enemy joins your group to show you around his castle. The game shows this by having the character walk directly into the prince, whose personal space functions as some kind of weird nexus shared with the other five people who aren't his bodyguard (she's visibly walking behind you). If you've played a lot of RPGs, you probably won't blink an eye, but this strange abstraction hardly seems necessary. Plus, if the guy who just merged bodies with you would just inhabit his own physical space, he could lead you to points of interest around the castle.

Harvest Moon DS Unlockable GBA Cast
This game can import characters from the GBA Harvest Moon Friends of
Mineral Town and More Friends of Mineral Town. Be sure to boot the DS game
with the GBA game carts (one at a time) inserted in the DS' GameBoy slot.
Harvest Moon DS Unlock Casino
To unlock the CTo unlock the Casino you must rescue the following sprites:

Roller - On 8 Spring, walk towards Vesta's farm, crossing the bridge who
runs the Medal Exchange.

And any one of the following:

Press A in front of the well next to the Blue Bar for Hops who runs the
Poker Table.

Press A in front of the stove to the left of the Inner Inn for Tep, who
runs the Blackjack Table.

Press A in front of the fountain in Romana's Courtyard for Jum, who runs
the Memory Game Table.

If you find all three, you can play all three games, but finding just one
of the games will open the casino (albeit a sad looking one).

Harvest Moon DS Hint - Money Making Scheme For Upstarts
Early on, you can use a really "quick" way of making money that does not
take much energy or in-game time (although it may take quite a bit of real
time). Just enter the Excavation Site and before you do anything further,
save your game inside.

Proceed to dig for jewelry but do not save your game again. Instead,
simply note the map cells where you found the jewelry by digging up the
whole place. Go reload your last save and go directly to the spots where
you found the jewelry pieces before and dig only those squares. Save your
new found riches, and reset the Excavation Site by exitting and
re-entering the map.

You can loop the exploit -- the interred jewelry will randomized upon
entry to the Excavation Site (note leaving a mine and then going back
won't do; you need to exit completely to the 'outside'). You can repeat
this as long as you want (or as long as your dude's energy holds out).
While not helpful when other avenues of revenue are available, you will
find this quite helpful early on in starting up your place.
Harvest Moon DS Unlock The Shopping Network
Unlock the Shopping Network by ordering items for 10 days from Karen's
Supermarket. Doing this will rescue the Sprite who controls the Channel.
Harvest Moon DS Clear All Monsters On Mine Floor
This is a simple way to clear ALL monsters that are on the floor you are
currently on. You merely need to save your game once inside the floor you
wish cleared, then proceed to shut your DS off. Turn it back on and load
your save game, and voila! All of the monsters on that floor have been
defeated and you can continue to mine without any pests. Of course on the
next floor you proceed to there will be another new set of monsters, but
you may repeat the process if you want.

Submitted by Dillbert00

When you first reach any floor of the Mine, if you did not go too far (in
falling), save your game immediately. Defeat all the Dark Creatures and
save again. Now, smash all rocks and uncover all squares with your hoe to
find special items, but DO NOT SAVE.

When you find any special item, reload your game without saving and go
directly to the location of the special item and collect it. Now save your
game. Do this again and again until all special items on the floor are
found.

WARNING: Always save your game on any floor of the mine before you move at
all, as you may fall through a hole in the floor and go too far. Do not
walk in the mine if your energy level is at zero. If you fall through a
hole, you will pass out as soon as you reach the next floor. It's another
reason to save your game immediately.

Harvest Moon DS Hint - Weather Control
You can cheat the weather in this game in the same way as you do in
FoMT/MFoMT. Simply save your game before you go to bed. When you awaken in
the morning, watch the Weather Channel immediately.

If a hurricane or snowstorm is predicted for the next day, reload without
saving. It is useful always to save your game before you go to bed at
night. Although most Events will occur on sunny days, there are a few that
actually require rain. You can control the weather here as in other
Harvest Moon games by reloading until you obtain the result you desire.

Harvest Moon DS Hint - Brush Bonus
Have the rucksack open on the bottom screen. Not only have the brush and
glove equipped, but the slot in your rucksack immediately next to the
equipped tool space should be either the milker or the shears. When you
have a sheep ready to be shorn or a cow ready to be milked, wash with the
brush and touch glove BEFORE milking or shearing, and before petting.

Now wash your animal. When done, use your STYLUS to hit the BACK key. With
your stylus, quickly move the milker or shears to the equipped spot. 7 out
of 10 times I have done this, there is now either wool or milk in my
hands, and then I have still been allowed to shear my sheep or milk my cow
and get double product from the animal for that day.

Submitted by moonbeem3000 (Erika Martin)
Harvest Moon DS Hint - Ranching Bonus
Equip your Brush in your tool slot and equip the Touch Glove, and place
your milker or shears in the slot next to the tool slot in your Rucksack.
Make certain that your Rucksack is displayed on the screen before you
begin to wash your Animal and save your game before you begin.

Wash your animal using the stylus. When you see the Level Up 'bubble',
hit the back button and quickly switch to the milker or shears. A Level 8
product or higher will fall out of the milker or clippers into your hands.
A Level 8 product or higher will fall out of the milker or clippers into
your hands. You then can proceed to milk your cow or shear your sheep as
if nothing had occurred to obtain the product you usually obtain. It is
only BEFORE you actually use the milker or clippers that you will obtain
the upgraded bonus product. As you progress, the Level of product that you
obtain in this fashion will increase.

If you are not quick enough, you will not obtain the bonus product. If
you saved your game before y [16:47] Castleenchanted: you began to wash
the animal, you will be able to reload and try again. You can do this
every day with each of your animals including your cows, sheep and your
horse.

The product you receive does NOT depend on the animal but on the
implement. In other words, if you have the brush equipped and then switch
to the clippers, you will receive an upgraded form of wool even if the
animal is a cow or your horse. Remember that this is a BONUS product.
You still will be able to shear your sheep once each week in the normal
fashion and milk each cow daily!

Since wool is more valuable than milk, you may wish to use the clippers in
every case. If you obtain a Level 9 small wool from every animal, it will
be worth 900G. Turn that into yarn, worth 2700G. Ship that through the
Cannery for 4000G. Remember that you can obtain this bonus wool from
every animal, cows and horse included and that you still can milk your
cows as usual afterwards.

Harvest Moon DS Hint - Fast Mining (Cursed Tools)
When mining for Cursed Tools or Accessories, control your fall. Uncover
the hole, then save. Reload if you fall too far or not far enough.
Remember that you can lose 100 Stamina if you fall 100 floors.

When you reach a Floor with Cursed Tool or Accessory, save immediately
then find the location of the item and reload. Go to the spot and save
before uncovering. Each time you reload, you will get a different item.
Choose the one you want before saving the game!

plato

Plato

Born: 427 BC in Athens, Greece
Died: 347 BC in Athens, Greece

Before giving details of Plato's life we will take a few moments to discuss how definite the details are which we give below. The details are mostly given by Plato himself in letters which seem, on the face of it, to make them certain. However, it is disputed whether Plato did indeed write the letters so there are three possible interpretations. Firstly that Plato wrote the letters and therefore the details are accurate. Secondly that although not written by Plato, the letters were written by someone who knew him or at least had access to accurate information on his life. The third possibility, which unfortunately cannot be ruled out, is that they were written by someone as pure fiction.

Next we should comment on the name 'Plato'. In [13] Rowe writes:-

It was claimed that Plato's real name was Aristocles, and that 'Plato' was a nickname (roughly 'the broad') derived either from the width of his shoulders, the results of training for wrestling, or from the breadth of his style, or from the size of his forehead.

Plato was the youngest son of Ariston and Perictione who both came from famous wealthy families who had lived in Athens for generations. While Plato was a young man his father died and his mother remarried, her second husband being Pyrilampes. It was mostly in Pyrilampes' house that Plato was brought up. Aristotle writes that when Plato was a young man he studied under Cratylus who was a student of Heracleitus, famed for his cosmology which is based on fire being the basic material of the universe. It almost certain that Plato became friends with Socrates when he was young, for Plato's mother's brother Charmides was a close friend of Socrates.

The Peloponnesian War was fought between Athens and Sparta between 431 BC and 404 BC. Plato was in military service from 409 BC to 404 BC but at this time he wanted a political career rather than a military one. At the end of the war he joined the oligarchy of the Thirty Tyrants in Athens set up in 404 BC, one of whose leaders being his mother's brother Charmides, but their violent acts meant that Plato quickly left.

In 403 BC there was a restoration of democracy at Athens and Plato had great hopes that he would be able to enter politics again. However, the excesses of Athenian political life seem to have persuaded him to give up political ambitions. In particular, the execution of Socrates in 399 BC had a profound effect on him and he decided that he would have nothing further to do with politics in Athens.

Plato left Athens after Socrates had been executed and travelled in Egypt, Sicily and Italy. In Egypt he learnt of a water clock and later introduced it into Greece. In Italy he learned of the work of Pythagoras and came to appreciate the value of mathematics. This was an event of great importance since from the ideas Plato gained from the disciples of Pythagoras, he formed his idea [6]:-

... that the reality which scientific thought is seeking must be expressible in mathematical terms, mathematics being the most precise and definite kind of thinking of which we are capable. The significance of this idea for the development of science from the first beginnings to the present day has been immense.

Again there was a period of war and again Plato entered military service. It was claimed by later writers on Plato's life that he was decorated for bravery in battle during this period of his life. It is also thought that he began to write his dialogues at this time.

Plato returned to Athens and founded his Academy in Athens, in about 387 BC. It was on land which had belonged to a man called Academos, and this is where the name "Academy" came from. The Academy was an institution devoted to research and instruction in philosophy and the sciences, and Plato presided over it from 387 BC until his death in 347 BC.

His reasons for setting up the Academy were connected with his earlier ventures into politics. He had been bitterly disappointed with the standards displayed by those in public office and he hoped to train young men who would become statesmen. However, having given them the values that Plato believed in, Plato thought that these men would be able to improve the political leadership of the cities of Greece.

Only two further episodes in Plato's life are recorded. He went to Syracuse in 367 BC following the death of Dionysius I who had ruled the city. Dion, the brother-in-law of Dionysius I, persuaded Plato to come to Syracuse to tutor Dionysius II, the new ruler. Plato did not expect the plan to succeed but because both Dion and Archytas of Tarentum believed in the plan then Plato agreed. Their plan was that if Dionysius II was trained in science and philosophy he would be able to prevent Carthage invading Sicily. However, Dionysius II was jealous of Dion who he forced out of Syracuse and the plan, as Plato had expected, fell apart.

Plato returned to Athens, but visited Syracuse again in 361 BC hoping to be able to bring the rivals together. He remained in Syracuse for part of 360 BC but did not achieve a political solution to the rivalry. Dion attacked Syracuse in a coup in 357, gained control, but was murdered in 354.

Field writes in [6] that Plato's life:-

... makes it clear that the popular conception of Plato as an aloof unworldly scholar, spinning theories in his study remote from practical life, is singularly wide of the mark. On the contrary, he was a man of the world, an experienced soldier, widely travelled, with close contacts with many of the leading men of affairs, both in his own city and elsewhere.

Plato's main contributions are in philosophy, mathematics and science. However, it is not as easy as one might expect to discover Plato's philosophical views. The reason for this is that Plato wrote no systematic treatise giving his views, rather he wrote a number of dialogues (about 30) which are written in the form of conversations. Firstly we should comment on what superb pieces of literature these dialogues are [6]:-

They show the mastery of language, the power of indicating character, the sense of a situation, and the keen eye for both its tragic and its comic aspects, which set Plato among the greatest writers of the world. He uses these gifts to the full in inculcating the lessons he wants to teach.

In letters written by Plato he makes it clear that he understands that it will be difficult to work out his philosophical theory from the dialogues but he claims that the reader will only understand it after long thought, discussion and questioning. The dialogues do not contain Plato as a character so he does not declare that anything asserted in them are his own views. The characters are historic with Socrates usually the protagonist so it is not clear how much these characters express views with which they themselves would have put forward. It is thought that, at least in the early dialogues, the character of Socrates expresses views that Socrates actually held.

Through these dialogues, Plato contributed to the theory of art, in particular dance, music, poetry, architecture, and drama. He discussed a whole range of philosophical topics including ethics, metaphysics where topics such as immortality, man, mind, and Realism are discussed.

He discussed the philosophy of mathematics, political philosophy where topics such as censorship are discussed, and religious philosophy where topics such as atheism, dualism and pantheism are considered. In discussing epistemology he looked at ideas such as a priori knowledge and Rationalism. In his theory of Forms, Plato rejected the changeable, deceptive world that we are aware of through our senses proposing instead his world of ideas which were constant and true.

Let us illustrate Plato's theory of Forms with one of his mathematical examples. Plato considers mathematical objects as perfect forms. For example a line is an object having length but no breadth. No matter how thin we make a line in the world of our senses, it will not be this perfect mathematical form, for it will always have breadth. In the Phaedo Plato talks of objects in the real world trying to be like their perfect forms. By this he is thinking of thinner and thinner lines which are tending in the limit to the mathematical concept of a line but, of course, never reaching it. Another example from the Phaedo is given in [6]:-

The instance taken there is the mathemtical relation of equality, and the contrast is drawn between the absolute equality we think of in mathematics and the rough, approximate equality which is what we have to be content with in dealing with objects with our senses.

Again in the Republic Plato talks of geometrical diagrams as imperfect imitations of the perfect mathematical objects which they represent.

Plato's contributions to the theories of education are shown by the way that he ran the Academy and his idea of what constitutes an educated person. He also contributed to logic and legal philosophy, including rhetoric.

Although Plato made no important mathematical discoveries himself, his belief that mathematics provides the finest training for the mind was extremely important in the development of the subject. Over the door of the Academy was written:-

Let no one unversed in geometry enter here.

Plato concentrated on the idea of 'proof' and insisted on accurate definitions and clear hypotheses. This laid the foundations for Euclid's systematic approach to mathematics. In [2] his contributions to mathematics through his students are summarised:-

All of the most important mathematical work of the 4th century was done by friends or pupils of Plato. The first students of conic sections, and possibly Theaetetus, the creator of solid geometry, were members of the Academy. Eudoxus of Cnidus - author of the doctrine of proportion expounded in Euclid's "Elements", inventor of the method of finding the areas and volumes of curvilinear figures by exhaustion, and propounder of the astronomical scheme of concentric spheres adopted and altered by Aristotle - removed his school from Cyzicus to Athens for the purpose of cooperating with Plato; and during one of Plato's absences he seems to have acted as the head of the Academy. Archytas, the inventor of mechanical science, was a friend and correspondent of Plato.

In mathematics Plato's name is attached to the Platonic solids. In the Timaeus there is a mathematical construction of the elements (earth, fire, air, and water), in which the cube, tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron are given as the shapes of the atoms of earth, fire, air, and water. The fifth Platonic solid, the dodecahedron, is Plato's model for the whole universe.

Plato's beliefs as regards the universe were that the stars, planets, Sun and Moon move round the Earth in crystalline spheres. The sphere of the Moon was closest to the Earth, then the sphere of the Sun, then Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and furthest away was the sphere of the stars. He believed that the Moon shines by reflected sunlight.

Perhaps the best overview of Plato's views can be gained from examining what he thought that a proper course of education should consist. Here is his course of study [2]:-

... the exact sciences - arithmetic, plane and solid geometry, astronomy, and harmonics - would first be studied for ten years to familiarise the mind with relations that can only be apprehended by thought. Five years would then be given to the still severer study of 'dialectic'. Dialectic is the art of conversation, of question and answer; and according to Plato, dialectical skill is the ability to pose and answer questions about the essences of things. The dialectician replaces hypotheses with secure knowledge, and his aim is to ground all science, all knowledge, on some 'unhypothetical first principle'.

Plato's Academy flourished until 529 AD when it was closed down by the Christian Emperor Justinian who claimed it was a pagan establishment. Having survived for 900 years it is the longest surviving university known.

Hint: Befriend The Sprites
Trying to make friends with the Harvest Sprites? An easy way to make them
like you is to give them the herbs on the beach from spring to fall. They
are located very close to their house (behind the church) and they love
them. You'll be playing with the gnomes and having them do your work in no
time.
When giving grass to harvest sprites, make sure to try and color
coordinate (e.g. give the blue sprite blue grass, purple sprite purple
grass, etc.) This will have a much bigger effect in building friendships.

Hint: Easy Power Berry
To get your first Power Berry, till all the squares in your farm's field.
It will appear somewhere in the field.

Hint: Unbreakable Fence
When you are clearing your field at the beginning of the game or after a
storm, instead of smashing the small stones, place them where you want
your fence. They do the same thing as a wooden fence except that they
require no maintenance and will never break. Also, you can chop all of the
sticks and put them towards an extension.

Hint: Reach Level 255 in Both Mines
Step One: When you first enter the mine or advance to a new level, save
your game in the 1st slot.

Step Two: Dig until you find the stairs. Remember where it is.

Step Three: Load game save from earlier. Go to the where you found the
stairs before saving immediatly and dig there. This way only a 1 enegy is
used.

Step Four: Before going down the stairs save the game in slot 2, in case
you run into a dead end. I've gone down 40 floors and found no dead end
floors. But if you dont want to waste more energy just restart and go back
down again.

Step Five: On the next floor repeat steps 1 to 4 again. Repeat as
necessary until you reach level 255.

Hinyt: Easy Legal Money
When it comes to Horse Racing, enter your horse. On the day of the
competition, bring your basket and save the game before entering the Rose
Square.

You may bet in the first two races if you want, but you don't have to. In
the third race, bet 99 times on your horse and when you win, buy 39
truffles and sell them the next day by leaving your basket in the square
(it won't disappear). Remember that truffles are much more worthy than
diamonds.
